from the desk of gretchen ehle zimmer :): What's Your Favorite Color?: "When you think of your favorite place, or places for me, think about the color and mood of that room or place. I have several. I..."

What's Your Favorite Color?

When you think of your favorite place, or places for me, think about the color and mood of that room or place.  I have several.  It would be almost as difficult for me to pick my favorite flower, animal, or child to just have one favorite place!  Most of my favorite places are vivid in color or nature and that truly suites me.  What is the color and mood of your favorite place?

As a child, one of our favorite questions for each other was, “what is your favorite color” and again I had several answers ranging from yellow, green, red, and orange.  Some people have had the same favorite color their entire lives.  See?  It’s fun to think about!  I always enjoyed that game and think that as adults; it’s still an important question.  What is your favorite color?  Is that also a color in one or all of your favorite places?   Haha, I’m betting that it just might be!

This spring, I’m committing to bringing a few more of my favorite colors inside to create a more “favorite feeling appeal”.  When you think about it, touching up a room or home with paint can give it an immediate transformation of cleanliness and luster.  Or modifying an entire room’s color!  That for me is an exciting, fairly inexpensive update that can transform the room’s dimension, personality and energy.  WATCH OUT paint samples, here I COME!   I’m thinking a gentle purple, then maybe hand drawing a large red and yellow flower?  Now that would be a favorite of mine for sure!  But I’m not entirely sure how that might rate amongst the rest of the Zimmer household.  I may just find that out soon!

12 Days of Christmas

The twelve days of Christmas may mean a variety of things to you. Perhaps the familiar song or a childhood play may come to mind immediately. They used to burst into my mind as well until now.  From this point forward, when I hear talk about the twelve days of Christmas I will think of the twelve consecutive exhibitor days at the annual Christmas Show that I completed, promoting my fabulous children’s books. Wow, great People watching!

“People watching” is a great hobby of mine. I love to take the opportunity to live vicariously for a brief moment in someone's world or conversation. I think most of us are admittedly nosy by nature and people watching is a great excuse to stare, be nosy and let the mind wonder. That may be where I am different. I probably stare too long and analyze (not that it’s fair justification but most gals with a masters’ degree in counseling are going to be a little over analytical) and perhaps I entertain myself a little too much. But, when you have hours on end, no internet connection, and a lot of caffeine it seems like a wonderful thing to do, or the only thing to do!

People watching at the twelve day show was unlike airport people watching (another great spot if you are considering taking up the sport.)
The people here didn't seem quite so diverse. These people came prepared for shopping. They came equipped! Something that would never occur to me because online shopping has my forever vote.  It would never cross my mind to take a cart with me on a shopping adventure or better yet a stroller with no baby in tow. Sometimes these shoppers did strap on their young but often packages spilled over the strollers edges leaving no room for its intended use. Where did the baby go? Did they borrow the stroller or was that a purchase too? I'm sure my face distorted as I zoned out in their general direction, my mind filled with curiosity.

Another interesting observation other than the constant tantrums because I was situated merely one booth down from the Hello Kitty booth. (this may be an entirely separate blog for later) were:

American shoppers are severely out of shape; too tired to complete the mission of filling up the cart or empty baby carriage.  These shoppers had to take a lot of breaks and that wasn’t always easy or accessible.  I sold a lot of books to people who honestly just wanted a place to take a rest.  I would graciously offer them a seat and before you knew it, CHA-CHING another book, or sometimes a few, SOLD!

American shoppers, according to this very unscientific 12 day study, rarely pass up anything free although free choices are very difficult for them to make.  For example, Diego's Bakery was just to my right and they had to restock their free samples constantly. With good reason that stuff is delicious! They also loved my candy cane bait that I had scattered all about. But offer a child a free book mark because reading is cool and it just gets funny! It's not really a choice and maybe it's the whole talking to a stranger thing but there were a lot of much scarier things than free book marks and me at the show.

Lastly, I observed that people are generally nicer than they have to be and I was reminded how much I love meeting and making new friends.  And……if you are wondering, sure, I will probably do it all again next year. But please don't make me commit just yet. That really is like asking a woman in labor if she wants another kid.
